- SinusitisEach year 31 million people are afflicted with chronic sinusitis, making it one of the most common health conditions in the United States. The sinuses are air-filled cavities located within the bones around the nose and eyes that allow for natural ventilation and drainage. In Chronic Sinusitis, the sinus linings become inflamed, blocking the natural drainage passageways and leading to chronic infections and nasal obstruction.

- Ear InfectionsA neck abscess or deep neck infection is a collection of pus that originates from an infection in spaces between the structures of the neck such as the throat, tongue, and windpipe. Children are especially vulnerable to these kinds of infections, which often follow a bacterial or viral infection of the neck or head. Colds, flu, tonsillitis, sinus infections and ear infections can all precipitate an abscess.

- Emergency CareSometimes when a tonsil gets severely infected, it can cause an abscess. This collection of bacteria, which grows behind the tonsil, can cause difficulty swallowing, severe pain, and even difficulty breathing. We are able to take care of these in the office, which saves our patients hours of wait time in an Emergency Room and the high costs associated with hospital visits. If you are having significant difficulty breathing, however, you should call 911 or go straight to an Emergency Room instead of coming to the office.

- EndoscopyIf cancer is suspected, your doctor will perform a series of tests, such as endoscopy, CT scan or biopsy to diagnose and stage your condition. Treatment for cancer of the nose or sinuses usually involves surgery to remove the tumor and surrounding tissue, which may be performed in conjunction with chemotherapy or radiation therapy to ensure complete removal. The location of each patient’s tumor is essential in determining whether or not surgery is possible.

- MRITinnitus is not a disease in and of itself. It is just a symptom of some underlying disease or disorder, such as high blood pressure, heart problems, high cholesterol, diabetes, hypothyroid, food allergy, otosclerosis, Meniere’s disease, noise exposure, ear infections, impacted wax, or sinus problems. However, the cause of tinnitus can be due to a serious problem like a tumor or cancer. Therefore, it is important to have a thorough medical evaluation by an Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) physician, who may order blood tests, hearing tests, and/or a MRI. A diagnostic hearing evaluation by an Audiologist is very important, since many disorders display a specific pattern that will aid the ENT physician in diagnosing the cause of the tinnitus. In some cases, the patient will have dizziness or balance problems in conjunction with tinnitus and/or hearing loss. Since the hearing mechanism and the balance mechanism are both located in the inner ear, the ENT physician may order balance tests as well.
- Computed TomographySinus disease can cause significant problems in one’s life—chronic headaches with facial pain and pressure, inability to breathe well, poor sleep, poor smell and taste, and fatigue. We are able to assess your sinuses in the office with our state-of-the-art endoscopic equipment and our office-based CT scan machine, which exposes you to a fraction of the radiation that traditional CT scanners emit and takes only 40 seconds to perform while you are sitting up (no enclosed spaces). Should you require a procedure to open your sinuses, we often use “image guidance”, which is essentially GPS for our instruments while performing your surgery. This adds an extra layer of safety while performing these procedures.
- ChemotherapySurgical treatment for laryngeal cancer may involve endoscopic removal of tumors through the mouth using either laser or microscopic techniques, or removal of part or all of the larynx through open procedures such as a partial or total laryngectomy. If the cancer has spread from the larynx, the lymph nodes or other nearby structures may be removed as well. Radiation and chemotherapy are also commonly performed to treat laryngeal tumors, and may be used alone or in combination with surgery. A personalized, multidisciplinary treatment will be developed based on a thorough evaluation of each patient’s individual condition performed in our Los Angeles area office.
- Radiation TherapyIn order to determine which type of treatment is most appropriate for each patient’s individual condition, your doctor will first determine the stage of the cancer through a series of diagnostic exams performed in our Santa Monica office. A customized treatment plan is then developed, which may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a combination of these approaches. Surgery for mouth and throat cancer involves a removal of the tumor and a small margin of surrounding tissue to ensure that all cancerous cells have been successfully eliminated.

- OtolaryngologyMany people were born with their deviated septum but it can also be the result of an injury – common among those that play sports. The American Academy of Otolaryngology estimates that up to 80% of nasal septum’s are not centered and that it’s usually not noticed. A deviated septum can be diagnosed when the septum is severely off center or noticeably crooked. In some cases, treatment is not needed. For those with symptoms, nasal sprays and nasal strips can be attempted. However, surgery to correct the deviation is the most effective therapy.

- RhinoplastyLiquid Rhinoplasty is a non-surgical treatment that changes the shape of the nose using injectable fillers. Liquid Rhinoplasty can improve the shape, size, and in some situations, position of the nasal tip, straighten the nose, and hide a bump. Liquid Rhinoplasty is not for everyone, since it can only be used to fill hollows or depressions. Liquid Rhinoplasty does not make a nose smaller and it does not remove bumps. A consultation and an examination is needed to determine if you are a candidate for a Liquid Rhinoplasty.
- Face LiftTreatment of parotid gland tumors may require surgical removal of the gland. This procedure, known as parotidectomy, is performed under general anesthesia and may require a short hospital stay as well. Depending on the size of the tumor, a partial or total parotidectomy may be performed. During a parotidectomy, an incision is made in front of the ear, similar to the incision used during a facelift. The tumor and a small margin of surrounding tissue are removed through the incision. After the parotidectomy procedure, a drainage tube will be placed at the incision site to collect blood, serum and saliva, which can usually be removed after one day.

- DermatologySkin cancer is extremely common in the United States, especially in our sunny state of California. Fortunately these skin cancers are curable when removed in a timely fashion. This is often being performed by our dermatology colleagues with a procedure called Mohs micrographic surgery, where the skin cancers and the edges are looked at under a microscope to assure that the cancer cells are all gone. As trained head and neck surgeons / facial plastic surgeons, we specialize in repairing these defects with minimal cosmetic deformity. These are most commonly done with the patients completely awake using local anesthetic.

Masses of the head and neck may represent a variety of conditions such as infections, congenital lesions, benign growths, or malignant tumors. Our physicians will determine the etiology of a head and neck mass by reviewing the patient’s symptoms.
