Los Alamos National Laboratory creates and applies advanced science and technology to solve critical challenges in national defense and civilian research. The laboratory develops science and technology to ensure the safety and reliability of the United States nuclear deterrent; reduce the threat of weapons of mass destruction, proliferation and terrorism; and solve national problems in defense, energy, environment, infrastructure, health and national security concerns. As part of the northern New Mexico community, the laboratory supports partnerships in the economic, academic and cultural life of the region. Los Alamos National Laboratory is operated by the University of California for the National Nuclear Security Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy and works in partnership with the National Nuclear Security Administration's Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories. The laboratory s five priorities are safety, security and compliance; the national security mission; outstanding science in support of their mission; business operations and management practices; and community partnerships. Founded in 1943, Los Alamos National Laboratory is in Los Alamos, N.M.
