Established in 1936, the Long Beach Township Beach Patrol protects and maintains the beach environment of Long Beach Township in New Jersey. The organization also provides ocean rescue services. It is responsible for identifying beach and water hazards, such as wind, surf and rip current conditions and controlling swimming and beach activities accordingly. The Long Beach Township Beach Patrol employs more than 150 lifeguards to educate and protect the public, as well as preserve the beach environment. The organization administers an exchange program that provides opportunities for lifeguards from Australia and various European countries to offer their services. It maintains a scuba search and rescue team, as well as coordinates the Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Program. The organization s Beachwheels Program provides beach wheelchairs to people with disabilities. The Long Beach Township Beach Patrol has been certified by the North Shore Lifesaving Association (NSLA).
