Founded in 1854, Westmoreland Coal Company is a United States energy company. Having transitioned from predominantly eastern-underground coal production for more than a decade, the company s operations include surface coal mining complexes in three western states and power operations in the east and west. Westmoreland employs nearly 875 people in seven states and is producing nearly 30 million tons of coal and generating 2.8 million MW-hours of electric power annually. The company also provides post-retirement benefits to more than 4,400 people. Headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo., Westmoreland Coal Company is a publicly owned company.
