• Sinusitis
  Nasal polyps associated with chronic sinusitis have long been one of the most vexing problems for otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat surgeons). Try as they might, otolaryngologists have not been able to eradicate nasal or sinus polyps even with surgery. One day in 1998, Dr. Smith was seeing a patient who had moved here from New York with a history of over 30 surgeries done for nasal polyps. She needed yet another surgery which Dr. Smith did completely using endoscopic surgery. Seeing the patient approximately three days postoperatively, Dr. Smith was confounded by the quick regrowth of the polyps that he had previously removed. It was on that day that Dr. Smith decided that polyps were not truly curable with surgery alone. What else was needed to control this seemingly relentless recurrence of polyps, remained a mystery.

  John has been a resident of Lawton since 1982. He has provided anesthesia services in all areas of the field to include extensive dedication to pediatrics and adult anesthesia in ear, nose and throat cases. John is board certified and a member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists since 1997. He is also certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

  From the very beginning, the practice was also set apart from any others in the region by many firsts for otolaryngology in Lawton. Dr. Smith was the first to do endoscopic sinus surgery and offer the most complete allergy and sinus treatment in Lawton. Dr. Smith was the first in the area to offer laser surgery for snoring and sleep apnea, the first to offer nerve monitoring during complex head and neck surgeries, and the first to incorporate professional environmental testing and treatment into complete therapy for allergy and sinus disease.

  Dr. Smith is board eligible in sleep medicine and is a member of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. We receive many outside referrals from other physicians to read sleep studies and diagnosis and manage their patients with sleep apnea. Utilizing video endoscopy to study the air passages and polysomnograms (sleep studies) to evaluate the patient’s night-time sleep, our doctors are uniquely qualified to diagnosis and treat sleep disorders.

  Dr. Smith was the Chief of Otolaryngology at Reynolds Army Hospital at Fort Sill, Ok from 1988-1992. During that time he served as the nation’s first Otolaryngologist- Head and Neck surgeon in Desert Sheild/Storm for 7 months deployed with the 47th Field Hospital from Fort Sill. Dale B. Smith, D.O. opened his private practice in Lawton in 1992 as Southwest Oklahoma Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialists with 4 staff members. Within a few months of this beginning, Dr. Smith took a partner (John H. McGath, M.D.) and added Lawton’s first private audiologist in a medical practice. As the first and only otolaryngology group in southern Oklahoma, Southwest Oklahoma Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialists, quickly developed a reputation as the source for excellent and compassionate care covering all areas of otolaryngology.

  Dr. Dale Smith and Dr. Timothy Teel recently visited San Diego, CA for a week long course in reconstructive cosmetic surgery of the face. Dr. Smith and Dr. Teel regularly attend seminars hosted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to bring patients the latest techniques for the best possible treatment and outcomes.

Also, because Dr. Smith has a full-time practice here in Lawton, patients don’t have to wait for their surgeon to make their rounds to this area before receiving needed care.
