- Primary CareYes. People with poorly controlled or long-standing diabetes are most susceptible to developing diabetic retinopathy, however the risk is reduced with strict regulation of blood sugar levels. Maintenance of blood sugar levels is often achieved by following your prescribed diet and medications, with regular exercise, control of your blood pressure, and avoidance of alcohol and cigarettes. We at Mercer Eye Associates work closely with our patients’ primary care physicians and endocrinologists to help recognize and treat this condition. Regular eye exams with screening for retinopathy in patients with diabetes are an integral part of disease prevention and treatment.
- Emergency CareDr. Feldman is an attending physician on the Wills Eye Institute cornea service where he is involved in both the medical and surgical education of the Wills residents. He is an active member of the ocular trauma staff at the Wills Eye Emergency Department and specializes in the repair of traumatic corneal injury. Dr. Feldman is also on staff at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, and the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton, NJ. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has presented original research both at Wills Eye Institute and at the annual Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meetings.
- GlaucomaGlaucoma is an eye disease in which pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) rises dangerously high, damaging the optic nerve and causing vision loss. In a healthy eye, fluid is produced in the ciliary body, enters the eye, and then drains through tiny passages called the trabecular meshwork. In people with glaucoma, these passages become blocked and intraocular pressure rises.
- OphthalmologyDr. Jerome Montana was the standard of excellence in ophthalmologic surgery and diagnosis in this area for more than 35 years, until his retirement in December, 2003. Dr. Floyd Weinstock joined Dr. Montana in 1983 and continued the tradition of providing superlative care with compassion. He died tragically in August, 2007, at the pinnacle of his professional and personal life. Dr. Steven Ellis joined the practice in 1991 and has remained committed to maintaining the level of care expected by our patients. Dr. Robert Chiang joined us in August, 2003, and has provided a new energy and state of the art care with a friendly approach. Most recently, we welcomed Dr. Elad Feldman who will practice general ophthalmology but is also fellowship-trained in corneal diseases and surgery.

- Laser Eye SurgeryLASIK corrects the way light is bent, or refracted, as it passes through the cornea so that an image is focused properly on the retina, and objects can be seen clearly. During LASIK surgery, a thin flap is cut in the surface of the cornea. The flap is temporarily lifted and an excimer laser beam is used to reshape the corneal stromal curvature. The flap is then replaced in its original position, resulting in a cornea which has been perfectly reshaped to provide clear vision. LASIK is approved to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

- Cataract SurgeryA cataract is diagnosed when your natural lens, which focuses light, becomes cloudy. There is usually no pain associated with this condition, but common symptoms include blurred vision, increased glare, or a “film” sensation over the eye. Cataract surgery removes your cloudy lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).
- Eye ExamMild scarring, swelling or surface irregularity may be treated medically or with a non-invasive therapy to improve the level or quality of vision. For more extensive corneal disease, various surgical techniques such as corneal transplants, or corneal surface reshaping procedures may be required to improve or restore vision. A thorough eye examination and consultation are necessary before a treatment decision can be made.
- Internal MedicineDr. Ellis attended Franklin and Marshall College, graduating in 1978 Magna Cum Laude. He was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
