Founded in 1978, Independence is an independent living center that serves people with physical and mental disabilities. Its services include advocacy, technology assistance, community education and outreach, computer training, counseling, housing assistance, independent living skills training and personal care attendant management. The organization also offers information and referral, technical assistance, transportation and volunteer peer counseling. Its computer learning center provides computer training classes, and is equipped with a variety of assistive technologies, including screen readers and magnifiers, a voice input system, scanners, Braille output, trackballs and alternative keyboards. The organization additionally organizes a range of recreational activities. Independence is based in Lawrence, Kan.
