Established in 1917, the Nevada Department of Transportation is responsible for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of the 5,400 miles of highway and over 1,000 bridges that make up the state highway system. It designs and provides a range of public transportation services and defines and develops bus and train services. The department also oversees various allied projects from the Adopt-a-Highway program to the maintenance of State Historical Markers. It additionally maintains maintenance and operations, human resources, finance, motor vehicles, planning, public relations, and technology and support services divisions. Headquartered in Carson City, Nev., the department maintains an office in Las Vegas.
