In cases where an ear infection can’t be definitively diagnosed, your doctor may wait before prescribing antibiotics. The American Academy of Pediatrics issued guidelines in 2013 encouraging doctors to wait before recommending antibiotics in cases where ear infections can’t be definitively diagnosed since some ear pain isn’t caused by infection. If symptoms do not improve within several days, the guidelines recommend starting antibiotics.

- MRIOur otolaryngologist will begin by reviewing your symptoms, how long they’ve lasted and their severity. A hearing test and imaging tests, such as CT or MRI scans, will also be performed.
- X-Rays
- Computed TomographyOur otolaryngologist will determine if otosclerosis is causing your symptoms. They may perform a physical examination, hearing tests or a CT scan. They’ll also discuss your questions and concerns, as well as make sure you have a full understanding of your condition.
- ChemotherapyTreatment will vary based on the size, type and location of your cancer. If the cancer has not spread, it may simply require a biopsy that removes the entirety of the growth. Other cases may require chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of these procedures. Our otolaryngologist will recommend the treatment that will best serve your individual needs, and we’ll be with you through every step.
- Radiation TherapyIf a tumor is discovered, our team will create a customized treatment plan based on your individual needs and consider factors like the location of the tumor, its size and type, whether it is benign or malignant and your overall health. Options may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or a combination of treatments. Because of the location, minimally invasive surgical procedures are done whenever possible.
- Minimally Invasive SurgeryThis minimally invasive surgery takes about 20 minutes. First, a topical anesthetic is applied to your soft palate to numb it. The surgeon then injects the area with a local anesthetic and inserts three tiny implants into the junction of the hard and soft palates. As the tissue heals, the implants help support and stiffen the soft palate, reducing relaxation and vibration of the tissues and preventing obstruction of the upper airway.
