For 70 years prior to 1998, the State of Michigan, through various agencies, had manufactured vaccines. Then BioPort Corporation was founded for the sole purpose of acquiring the assets of the Michigan Biologic Products Institute from the State of Michigan. Following the State of Michigan s decision to privatize the facility and after an extensive open bid process, BioPort Corporation acquired the assets of Michigan Biologics Products Institute. In addition to anthrax vaccine adsorbed, the other products manufactured by the state included a rabies vaccine, human albumin and intra-muscular immune globulin. BioPort received FDA approval of the renovated anthrax vaccine manufacturing facility. The vaccine produced by BioPort is the only FDA licensed anthrax vaccine proven to protect against the deadly threat of anthrax.
