Lancaster County Prison is responsible for the security and custody of individuals who are charged with criminal offenses. The prison, incorporated in 1729, has more than 1,000 inmates. It is a 950-plus-bed facility and has over 5000 admissions annually. The prison is visited by nearly 30,000 civilians annually. Lancaster County Prison offers counseling and medical, psychiatric and mental health care services. The prison operates a variety of community service, educational and vocational training programs. In addition, it offers religious counseling services. The prison conducts a work release program that places eligible inmates from prison into the community work force. Lancaster County Prison is operated by the County of Lancaster in Pennsylvania.
