- Steering Service/RepairThe Fit is quite perky to drive, thanks to a 117-horsepower, 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with i-VTEC variable valve timing system. The engine provides enough power even with the available automatic transmission, which has five speeds for better passing response and more relaxed highway cruising. A precise-shifting 5-speed manual is standard, but for those who want the best of both worlds, the Fit Sport model, when fitted with the automatic transmission, features paddle-shifters alongside the steering wheel. With its front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam setup, the Fit's suspension utilizes a common layout, yet handles nimbly. Ride quality is firm but also absorbent. The rack-and-pinion electric power steering system is especially good, with crisp turn in and a firm, direct feel of the road in tight corners. Above all else, it's the Fit's interior that will wow shoppers. Front seats are ample for tall or large adults, an armrest is available in front and the back seat can actually seat adults, thanks to plenty of headroom all around and longer cushions than is customary for back seats. What's more, the Fit's rear seat folds neatly down to create a flat floor with just one continuous motion, with no need to even remove the rear headrest. The steering wheel adjusts for tilt and telescope, and there's a footrest for the driver. There's also an abundance of cupholders and cubbies. Thanks to the versatile configuration, the fit is surprisingly commodious for large cargo items. With the seats down, there's 57.3 cubic feet of space--enough for items like a big-screen TV or cumbersome sports equipment--and there's no tall edge to lift over when loading items. Also of note on the 2009 Fit is a new body structure that's not only much stiffer but also includes Honda's ACE body structure, which is designed for better compatibility with vehicles of different sizes. The Fit has done well in crash tests and is the only vehicle in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's 'Minicar' category to achieve Top Safety Pick status for 2009. Standard safety equipment on the Fit includes anti-lock brakes and active front headrests, along with front side and side-curtain airbags. Electronic stability control, a feature not usually seen on low-priced small cars, is available on the Fit Sport. The Fit comes in two different models, Fit and Fit Sport. Even the base Fit includes a long list of features such as air conditioning plus power windows and locks--but the Fit Sport adds a long list of the most popular features like larger alloy wheels, remote entry, cruise control and a premium 160-watt sound system with USB input and MP3 capability. It's also dressed up a bit more, with aerodynamic spoilers and additional chrome trim outside, plus perforated leather trim for the steering wheel.
- Tire ServiceSubaru's 2010 Impreza comes in several trim levels. The base 2.5i, the new 2.5GT and the sporty WRX come either as a 4-door sedan or a 5-door hatchback, while the Outback Sport and the STi models are hatchback-only. The sedan is about six inches longer than the hatchback, and the trunk is large enough to hold three golf bags. On both body styles, the rear seats can be folded forward for more cargo capacity; on hatchbacks they fold forward for a flat-loading floor. All Imprezas are powered by a 2.5L horizontally opposed 4-cylinder. The base Impreza 2.5i produces 170 horsepower and can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. The automatic transmission-only 2.5GT, introduced in 2009, is powered by a 224 hp turbocharged engine, while the 2010 WRX turbo delivers 265 hp and comes only with the 5-speed manual. The high-performance STi puts out 305 hp through its 6-speed manual transmission. All Impreza and WRX models feature all-wheel drive, and those equipped with a manual transmission include hill-hold assist. The boxer engine sits low and the overall design and placement help provide a low center of mass for secure handling. In addition to keeping the Impreza and WRX planted, the double-wishbone rear suspension helps improve interior space and reduces road noise. WRX hatchbacks are distinguished visually by an under-body diffuser and single chrome exhaust pipe, while sedans have a dual-chrome-tipped exhaust and trunk spoiler. The STi includes distinctive, bulged fenders front and rear, as well as special 18-inch alloy wheels and tires, rally-inspired suspension, a throatier exhaust and Brembo disc brakes. The Outback Sport model features a raised suspension, body-side cladding, unique upholstery with heated front seats, and other additional equipment oriented toward those who plan to take the rough road. The Premium package includes a power moonroof, alloy wheels, brake assist, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise control functions and an upgraded audio system with 6-disc CD changer. The new 2.5GT comes standard with the amenities of the Premium package and is available only with an automatic transmission. Inside the Impreza, there's a twin-cockpit design with a brushed-aluminum look throughout, with an available navigation/info screen as the centerpiece. The navigation system also has inputs for gaming consoles. Two major option packages are available for 2010. The $500 Special Edition package, available on 2.5i Premium models, bundles a power moonroof with fog lights and the All Weather package, while the $3,000 Power Moonroof and Navigation package consists of an automatic transmission, fog lights, power moonroof, touchscreen GPS navigation, 10-speaker audio system with single in-dash CD player, SIRIUS satellite radio with Bluetooth and a trip computer. Standard safety features for all Imprezas include dual front and side-curtain airbags, 4-channel, 4-sensor anti-lock brakes and traction and stability control.

- Auto MaintenanceHyundai's entire 2008 Veracruz line is powered by a 260-horsepower, 3.8L aluminum-block V6 and six-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic function, which allows the driver to manually select gearshifts. An electronic all-wheel drive system normally sends the majority of engine torque to the rear wheels but can send more to the back before actual wheel slippage. It also includes an AWD Lock mode, which locks the split 50/50 front/back at low speeds--especially of use in mud, sand, or deep snow. The engine has continuously variable intake valve timing and a variable intake system for a combination of low-rev responsiveness and high-rev power, and its steel timing chain has no scheduled maintenance. Furthermore, it has a semi-active mounting system to help reduce vibration. The Veracruz rides on a smooth four-wheel independent suspension oriented toward comfort and handling. In front there are MacPherson struts, while a multi-link setup rounds out the rear. Stabilizer bars are used front and back for tight handling. A long list of safety features are standard on the Veracruz, including electronic stability control, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, electronic brakeforce distribution, and brake assist, along with active front head restraints and front side air bags and roof-mounted side air bags. Second and third row seats have adjustable head restraints. There are three Veracruz models--GLS, SE, and Limited--and while each has the same engine and mechanical underpinnings they span a wide range in terms of equipment. The GLS comes in at a temptingly low base price, while the SE takes on a sportier flavor and the Limited packs on the traditional luxury features along with some modern high-tech conveniences. Inside, there's seating for seven, including a standard hideaway third seat that folds down for a completely flat cargo area. All models also have second-row seats that slide forward for easy access. The GLS model comes with air conditioning, heated power side mirrors, power windows and locks, cruise control, remote keyless entry, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, and a 172-watt CD/MP3 audio system with steering wheel-mounted audio controls, among other features. The SE includes larger 18-inch alloy wheels, along with a power driver's seat, a roof rack, automatic headlights, fog lamps, and a center console with cooling box, auto-dimming outside mirrors. At the top of the range, the Limited adds leather upholstery with heated seats in front, automatic climate control, a power sunroof, power-adjustable pedals, a power-adjustable steering wheel, blue-backlit scuff plates, an AC power outlet, a proximity key fob, rain-sensing wipers, and a 315-watt Infinity sound system with CD changer. Major options on the Limited include a new LG navigation system and a 605-watt Logic 7 sound system.
