The Fremont National Forest covers territory in southern Oregon. Managed by the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, the Fremont National Forest is named after the explorer John C. Fremont. It is managed by a district office in Lakeview, Ore. The district office constructs and maintains trails, operates campgrounds, regulates grazing, patrols wilderness areas, and manages vegetation and wildlife habitat. Headquartered in Portland, Ore., the region contains 19 national forests, two national volcanic monuments, a national scenic area and national grassland. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the USDA Forest Service has a history of managing public lands. Established in 1905, the Forest Service has numerous regional offices that manage more than 150 national forests and grasslands. The Forest Service also has regional research stations, including the International Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products Laboratory.
