Back Pain Back or neck pain can begin from any number of causes: auto injuries causing a whiplash like injury, degenerative disc disease, sports injuries, disc herniation, and spinal stenosis from congenital problems are just a few of the possible etiologies. Since back pain is the second leading cause of doctors visits and hospitalizations (second only to pregnancy), it's a symptom that should not be taken lightly. The pain from neck or back injuries can alter our normal life activities, and if left unchecked, can lead to depression and disability. What can be affected? Back pain can be life altering. It can affect our recreation and even our intimacy. Sexual dysfunction, retirement from recreational sports, or even simple things like playing with young children, may all be the end result of unresolved back pain or neck pain symptoms. Is Surgery Needed? In the vast majority of cases for both neck pain and back pain, even when disc herniations are present, surgery is not needed.
