Owner John Lee came to our home for an estimate for some painting in the living areas. We explained we would be using the Lowe's brand, Valspar. However after negotiating, John said he would use his contractor's discount and upgrade us to Dunn Edwards or Vista paint as they are the "best quality!" He said this repeatedly. So the plan was for him to have either company match to the Valspar swatch.
We decided to hire him and contacted him to finalize the paint and make sure there were no questions on his end. I went to Dunn Edwards and found a similar color as I assumed it would make things easier. When I explained this to John he became fixated on this asking, "How different is the color from Valspar?" He asked this several times, which raised my suspicion. I let him know I would need to see the paint BEFORE he started any work. This agitated him. I had to ask about six times, "What kind of paint are you using?" before getting a straight answer. Eventually he confessed he might use another Lowe's brand (Olympic), instead of the "Best quality" he had offered in the beginning.
It is without a doubt that had I not questioned the paint, he would have used a lower quality paint, not disclosed this to us and not adjusted the price.
I will also be notifying the BBB about Lee's Custom Painting.
