Shira Varon, MD, is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist who provides a wide spectrum of care for women, including prenatal and childbirth care. She also provides well woman care, including health care maintenance and contraception, and has expertise in treating uterine fibroids and well as other gynecological conditions, such as abnormal bleeding, abnormal pap smears, pelvic pain, sexual health, and the effects of menopause. Dr. Varon is also experienced in minimally invasive surgery, including robotically assisted and laparoscopic procedures, for women with abnormal uterine bleeding or fibroids.Dr. Varon enjoys taking care of women throughout the changes in their lives, and finds bringing children into patients live to be especially rewarding. She believes that physicians must engage in a continuous process of learning and practicing evidence-based medicine in order to deliver quality care, and that the physician-patient relationship and the time spent discussing treatment options is as important as the chosen treatment plan. As an assistant professor in the Department of Reproductive Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, she instructs medical students and residents, and has received accolades for her excellence in teaching. She is also active in research, and serves as UC San Diego Healths lead physician for two clinical trials studying treatment options for uterine fibroids. Dr. Varon completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and earned her medical degree at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology.She is also a member of the UC Fibroid Network and has served on two national committees for the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which establishes standards of care for OB/GYN practices across the country.
