Dr. Loren Mell is a board-certified radiation oncologist who specializes in treating head and neck cancers. He is chief of radiation oncology services for head and neck cancer at UC San Diego Health and director of the clinical and translational research division of the Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine.His research interests include image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and clinical trial design. Dr. Mell is currently the principal investigator of the International Evaluation of Radiotherapy Technology Effectiveness in Cervical Cancer (INTERTECC) Trial, an international trial of IMRT for patients with gynecologic cancers. He is also currently examining the effectiveness of image-guided radiation techniques in preserving marrow health.Dr. Mell serves on national committees for head and neck, and cervical cancers. He is an associate editor for the International Journal of Radiation Oncology - Biology - Physics, the leading journal in the field of radiation oncology.Dr. Mell completed his residency training and was named chief resident at the University of Chicago.
