Established in 1913, the Cook County Highway Department is governed by Cook County in Illinois. It is responsible for the maintenance of more than 1,400 lane miles of pavements, bridges, traffic signals and pumping stations. The department also operates various maintenance district offices. The Cook County Highway Department issues construction and maintenance permits. It focuses on the maintenance of street entrances, ditch lines, water mains, and storm and sanitary sewers.
