The University Physicians Association is a nonexclusive independent practice association. The UPA was originally formed in 1995 to facilitate contracting and credentialing for its members with third-party payors and other health care providers. The association provides a variety of credentialing services for its own membership, as well as other clientele. The organization utilizes an National Committee for Quality Assurance and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations approved process to select and evaluate practitioners. More recently, the UPA expanded to become an employee leasing and medical practice billing company. Membership is not required to use the company s billing services, human resources and payroll administration. Services include billing and accounts receivable management, office management, employee leasing, payroll, audits, medical chart reviews, coding training and information systems technical support. The University Physicians Association is headquartered in Knoxville, Tenn.
