Founded in 1946, the American Cancer Society is a community-based, voluntary health organization that is involved in the elimination of cancer. It prevents cancer and saves lives of people through research, education, advocacy and service. With more than two million volunteers, the organization is one of the oldest and largest health agencies in the United States. It maintains operations with over 10 chartered divisions throughout the United States and in various communities. The American Cancer Society is responsible for the overall planning and coordination of programs for cancer information delivery, control and prevention, resource development and patient services. It also provides technical support and materials to divisions and local offices. The organization additionally administers several intramural and extramural research programs. It operates more than 3,400 local offices to deliver cancer prevention and early detection solutions.
