- Oral SurgeryMost children lose all their baby teeth by age 13, and by the end of their teen years, the jaw bones will harden and stop growing. Orthodontic procedures for adults often take more time and can involve tooth extraction or oral surgery. Receiving early orthodontic treatment as a child can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult, leaving little to no chance of extraction or surgery in the future.
- Jaw SurgeryYour orthodontist can tell you if orthognathic surgery is needed as part of your treatment. Depending on the severity of your case and the alignment of your jaw, you may or may not need surgery.
- Maxillofacial SurgerySurgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a type of orthodontic treatment used to correct severe cases that include bad bites, jaw bone abnormalities, and malocclusion. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of the nine recognized dental specialties, and it focuses on treating complex craniofacial cases that involve the mouth, jaw, face, and skull. If you need surgical orthodontics, your orthodontist will work with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to ensure that you receive the best care possible.
- Tooth ExtractionsIf Drs. McReynolds and Gopffarth determine that removing your wisdom teeth is necessary, they will refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to perform the extraction. The procedure is typically done in office without a need for any hospital visits. Wisdom tooth extractions typically take less than an hour, depending on each individual case. Once the extractions are complete, you will have about a 24- to 48-hour recovery period, depending on your age and the complexity of the surgery. Post-op care continues for a couple of weeks as you ensure that your extraction sites can heal completely.

As Gold Plus providers of Invisalign, Dr. McReynolds and Dr. Gopffarth specialize in tooth movement with clear aligner therapy. They are able to plan the final outcome of your treatment digitally, which is then sent to Invisalign for fabrication of your aligners. Each aligner moves the teeth incrementally toward the desired tooth position. Invisalign also allows the use of other auxiliaries, such as attachments, bite ramps, and elastics, to achieve a truly ideal outcome.
