General Info
Flathead National Forest is a national forest in northwestern Montana. The forest covers more than 2 million acres, of which approximately half is designated wilderness. It is named after the Flathead Indians. Flathead National Forest is located in the Rocky Mountains and has elevations ranging from less than 4,500 feet to more than 8,500 feet. Commercial activities in the non-wilderness sections of the forest include timber harvesting, downhill ski resorts and cattle grazing. While camping is allowed almost anywhere within national the forest without a permit, Flathead National Forest also has dozens of campgrounds with some facilities. Most campgrounds do not have running water. Flathead National Forest was designated as a national forest in 1899 and is located in Kalispell, Mont.
