When Brigitte Engelmann, MD, PhD, was five years old, she had a friend who underwent surgery for a heart murmur. Dr. Engelmann was so impressed with all the things her friend was able to do after the surgery that she had been unable to do prior to treatment, including many things that healthy children take for granted. Dr. Engelmann knew she wanted to make that kind of difference in people’s lives. That experience led her desire to become a doctor.Dr. Engelmann chose internal medicine and pediatrics because she enjoyed taking care of the whole family and wanted more specialized training in pediatrics. Working with people, getting to know them and partnering with them to help them achieve their goals are things that Dr. Engelmann enjoys about her job. She is particularly interested in the transition of children with chronic illnesses to adult medicine. She also likes working with patients to help them achieve and maintain their ideal weight goals.In her free time, Dr. Engelmann enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing with her dog, swimming, gardening and cooking/baking. She also crochets when she has extra time.For me, medicine is more than a job, it’s a calling to help my patients be the healthiest version of themselves. In order to achieve this, I like to get to know my patients and partner with them to find solutions. I enjoy taking care of patients at all stages of life. I particularly enjoy taking care of entire families. I try to give all my patients the respect and care that I hope would be given to my loved ones.
