The National Safety Council is a nonprofit, nongovernmental, international public service organization dedicated to protecting life and promoting health. The council is a membership organization, founded in 1913 and chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1953. Members include more than 46,000 businesses, labor organizations, schools, public agencies, private groups and individuals. The Council s Research and Statistical Services Group provides an overview of the nation's unintentional-injury experience and trends. It does this by gathering injury statistics from many sources and assembling them into a comprehensive picture. The department professionals also perform detailed analyses of various injury data sets to aid in the identification of problems, selection of countermeasures, and the evaluation of program effectiveness Its network of chapters conducts safety, health and environmental efforts at the community level, providing training, conferences, workshops, consultation, newsletters, updates and safety support materials, as well as valuable networking avenues. Located in many cities across the United States and in the United Kingdom, its network extends the Council's visibility and provides a local voice for advocating issues that can educate, inform, protect, and save lives.
