About Gray Matter LLC GRAY MATTER LLC is a consulting firm that provides intelligent software solutions for business-management applications, with an emphasis on intellectual-property licensing and distribution in the entertainment industries. GRAY MATTER was started in 1998 by Glenn A. Barber and Lorin Brennan, who together have more than 20 years combined experience in database design and intellectual-property licensing. Glenn Barber is the architect of the leading rights-tracking and accounting systems used in the entertainment industry. Lorin Brennan is an attorney who has written the industry standard international licensing agreements for entertainment products. Both mathematicians by training, they bring extensive technical and practical experience to designing and implementing intelligent software solutions for critical business needs. LORIN BRENNAN is an internationally recognized expert on intellectual-property licensing, especially in the entertainment industry. He has drafted the industry standard international distribution license forms. He is a frequent speaker on intellectual-property licensing issues both in the United States and abroad, including lecturing for the World Intellectual Property Organization. Mr. Brennan is the author of numerous professional articles on international motion picture licensing and financing issues and e-commerce law. Mr. Brennan received his B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1974. He received his J.D. degree in 1978 from U.C. Hastings College of the Law, where he was the Editor-in-Chief of Comm/Ent: A Journal of Communications and Entertainment Law. He was admitted to the California Bar that same year. In 1983 Mr. Brennan joined Lorimar Productions as Director of Distribution Legal and Business Affairs. In 1988, he became Vice-President, Business Affairs for Carolco Pictures, where he remained until October of 1995. In 1987, Mr. Brennan was elected Vice-Chairman, Secretary, of the American Film Marketing Association, a trade association representing independent motion picture producers and distributors. He served as President of the Independent Producers Association, a trade association representing independent motion picture and television producers, from 1995 to 1998. Mr. Brennan has been an active participant on the database design team for several rights-tracking projects. He worked on an early rights project for Lorimar implemented on the Informix database. He was a consultant in the development Entertainment Rights Licensing package, where he began working with Glenn Barber. He was also responsible for the design specifications for the AFMA Registry, a database to identify rights ownership for independent motion pictures. GLENN A. BARBER is an educator, technologist, systems architect and developer of a wide range of software applications. From 1994 to 2001, he was a popular lecturer at UCLA Extension, School of Engineering, on enterprise applications, database design and object-oriented development. He has served as consultant and mentor to a wide range of clients, including Price Waterhouse Coopers, AT&T, Weyerhauser, Hughes, Prudential, Toyota, Hitachi, Sybase, and MCI-Systems House. He received a special commendation from the Los Angeles Police Department for developing the Law Enforcement Analysis Data Systems ( LEADS ), a law enforcement and anti-terrorist tracking system. His work encompasses a wide array of technology skills: CASE technologies Power Designer and Erwin ; database systems Sybase, SQL Server, DB2/400, and Oracle ; rapid application development tools Power Builder, Power J ( Java ), and Visual Basic ; and operating systems Windows NT, UNIX, AS/400, and VAX VMS.
