Shakespeare's Pub & Grill was opened on June 1, 1999 by local resident Suzi Spalj. Having graduated from City High and the University of Iowa, owning Shakespeare's Pub & Grill started with a dream of owning an A&W Rootbeer restaurant. She worked various jobs at fast-food restaurants for several years while maintaining a position at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to make sure owning a restaurant is what she wanted to do. Hearing that a bar and restaurant named Jirsa's was for sale, she thought this would be a good fit for her dream. She applied and worked there for a month before deciding to buy the bar from it's previous owner. It was been a local neighborhood bar since the 1970's. Some of the previous names were the Annex, Billy's, and Jirsa's. Our location has 13 tables and a full bar. Our kitchen is open 11 am - 10 pm
