General Info
Established in 1985, the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville is a public, nonprofit corporation that was founded to finance and operate the solid waste management system. It operates Waste-to-Energy Facility, which is also known as The Steam Plant and is designed to process municipal solid and commercial waste and limited amounts of dried sewage sludge up to 690 tons per day. The corporation administers a recycling program that includes recycling magazines, newspapers, household batteries, appliances, and aluminum, aerosol and steel cans for the residents of the city of Huntsville and Madison County in Alabama. It maintains a landfill that features a more than 20-acre cell for household garbage disposal and an over 15-acre quarry for construction debris and nonhousehold waste storage.
