• Glaucoma
  Glaucoma is typically characterized by abnormally elevated eye pressure, which irreversibly damages the optic nerve. The optic nerve carries the images we see from the light sensing retina at the back of the eye to the brain. The damaged nerve tissue generally affects the peripheral vision first and can advance to include the central vision. Glaucoma rarely has any symptoms until it is in an advanced stage. There are several forms of this disease which differ as to the cause of the increased eye pressure. If the trabecular meshwork (the natural drain of the eye) is not blocked by the iris it is called Open-Angle Glaucoma, if the trabecular meshwork is blocked by the iris it is called Narrow-Angle Glaucoma.

• Cataract Surgery
  Cataract surgery is a relatively simple, safe outpatient procedure designed to replace the lens of your eye with an artificial lens. Normally, your eye’s lens is clear, but a cataract causes it to become cloudy, affecting your vision. Cataract surgery, performed by an ophthalmologist, corrects your vision so you can see normally again.

  Nearsightedness can be diagnosed with a general eye examination that includes visual acuity and refraction testing to determine your ability to see near and far images and the degree of the refractive error. Your eye exam may also include slit-lamp testing, in which your doctor uses a light and microscope to examine your inside eye structures.

Radiologist

• Ultrasound
  About a week before surgery, your doctor may perform a painless ultrasound test to measure the shape and size of your eye. The purpose of this test is to determine the right type of intraocular lens (IOL) to implant. An IOL improves your vision by focusing light on the back of the eye. You will not see or feel the lens once it is implanted, and as a permanent part of your eye, it does not require care.

Dr. Lopez received his medical degree from University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1995. Dr. Lopez worked at his private ophthalmology practice in Aurora Illinois in 2003 and later moved his practice to Lombard, Illinois. He joined Aran Eye Associates in 2017.
