The Helena Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency that works to maintain law and order and protect residents lives and their property. It operates a training division that supports the Explorer program, which provides law enforcement training to students between the ages of 14 and 21. The department also supports the ride along program. The Helena Police Department maintains a communication center that responds to calls for police, fire and medical emergency services. It supports the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program, which helps children avoid involvement with drugs, gangs and violence. The department also conducts basic training classes in arrest and search techniques, bomb threat response, burglary and crime prevention, crime scene search, domestic crisis intervention, hostage negotiation, traffic accident investigation and white-collar crime.
