- Computed TomographyDiagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.
- Wound CareWound care is particularly important for those with diabetes. It’s possible that what appears to be a small wound could turn into more severe foot complications down the road if left untreated. It’s common for those with diabetes to experience neuropathy. Neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that affects the body and can cause you to lose feeling in the feet. If you’re no longer experiencing feeling in your feet and a wound develops, it’s very possible it may go unnoticed if you don’t check your feet daily.
- Ankle SurgeryWhen it comes to receiving foot and ankle surgery, it’s typically a case by case situation. Some factors that play a role in whether or not you need surgery include the severity of your symptoms as well as your response to other conservative, noninvasive treatment methods.
- Bunion SurgeryI took my 95 year old father to Dr. Silverstein to have his toes nails, which are in terrible condition, examined and trimmed. Dr. Silverstein and his staff are kind and attentive and do a great job with my Dad. I had bunion surgery done by Dr. Silverstein many years ago and my foot has been good ever since. He also treated heel pain for me and that has been gone for years as well. Highly recommend.
- BunionsA bunion is a bone deformity usually occurring at the base of the big toe. This is a progressive condition that is made worse by inward pressure from tight shoes. Bunions can be very painful, and in some instances surgery may be necessary to remove them.
- Ingrown ToenailsIngrown toenails can form when the side of a toenail begins to grow into the flesh surrounding the nail. As a result, the affected toe—most commonly the big toe—may become red, swollen, painful, and—in severe cases—infected.
- CornsCorns and calluses are hard layers of skin that usually form due to friction. Generally, they will be in areas of the foot that are bearing weight, or areas that frequently rub against the shoe. Soft corns are typically found between the toes.
- Calluses
- FungusThe Lunula Laser uses low-level laser light to treat foot fungus, and requires very little time or set-up for physicians or their staff. It’s the only system you can turn on and walk away—the device is already pre-set. In fact, only four 12-minute sessions are needed to treat the affected area.
- Physical TherapyPlantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that causes pain in the heel and bottom of the foot. The hallmark symptom is sharp, stabbing pain that is often most noticeable in the morning or after periods of inactivity. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes, known as the plantar fascia, becomes inflamed or irritated. Several factors can contribute to plantar fasciitis, including overuse, high-impact activities, flat feet, and wearing improper footwear. Treatment typically involves a combination of rest, stretching exercises, physical therapy, and the use of supportive footwear or orthotic inserts. In severe cases, corticosteroid injections or extracorporeal shock wave therapy may be considered. To prevent plantar fasciitis, it is beneficial to maintain a healthy weight, wear appropriate shoes, and avoid excessive high-impact activities. Additionally, it can help to stretch regularly to keep the plantar fascia and surrounding muscles flexible and strong. Early intervention and diligent preventive measures can help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with plantar fasciitis and promote better foot health. If you have plantar fasciitis, it is strongly suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can offer treatment options that are best for you.

- Diabetic Foot CareUnfortunately, foot problems are often a common result of having diabetes. As time goes by, it’s likely that diabetes can cause nerve damage, also known as diabetic neuropathy. This can lead to tingling or a painful sensation, and it may also cause you to lose feeling in your feet. The loss of feeling in your feet can become incredibly dangerous, especially if you can longer sense a blister or cut on your foot; this can lead to sores or infections.

- Fungus ToenailsToenail fungus is a condition that many people develop and suffer from. Toenail fungus often results in the discoloration and thickening of the toenail, which can cause embarrassment for many people. The condition begins as a small white or yellow growth beneath the tip of the nail and at its worse can develop into the nail’s deterioration.
- HammertoesHammertoe is a characterized by one or more of the toes having a bend in the middle joint. This occurs because of weakening of the muscle due to poorly fitted shoes or a genetically inherited trait.
- Heel SpursTo keep ankles strong and avoid dance injuries, it is important to take good care of them. Ankle problems can make it hard to move and do activities that use the legs. Dancing can be especially tough on ankles because of the energetic moves and jumps often involved. This can lead to issues like Achilles tendonitis, sprains, shin splints, and heel spurs. Pushing too hard can also hurt the ligaments, making ankles less flexible and painful. To prevent this, dancers can follow some good habits for healthy ankles. Warming up before dancing helps the muscles prepare for action. Moving the foot like drawing the alphabet can get blood flowing and make ankles more prepared. Practicing balance by standing on one foot for a minute can make ankles stronger and improve posture. Wearing ankle weights can be helpful for building strength and using ankle supports or braces can reduce pressure and keep ankles steady during dance. Watching one’s weight is also important because too much can harm the ankles. If you are a dancer and want to maintain the support of your ankles, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist to discuss additional methods for good ankle care.

- Ingrown ToenailsTreatment for an ingrown toenail will vary on a case by case basis. One form of treatment requires lifting the ingrown nail and placing a splint or piece of cotton underneath. Another method for a more severe case would involve partially removing the nail. For cases that need extreme care, the nail itself and tissue would have to be removed.
