Originally from Mobile, Alabama, Dr. Wright Lauten sought to pursue a degree in economics at Vanderbilt, but soon realized that his true calling in life was to help people get better. Dr. Lauten found inspiration in his three grandparents, all of whom have suffered from macular degeneration two legally blind from its effects. This close bond with family and strong desire to help others were the driving forces behind his pursuing ophthalmology and later vitreoretinal surgery. Dr. Lauten is devoted to helping and caring for people. An avid researcher, he contributes to the wealth of knowledge at national and international conferences for his findings with patients suffering from diabetes and macular degeneration. He embraces the idea of delivering visionary retina care to his patients. Dr. Lauten's passion for his practice stems from a commitment to compassionate care and contributions to medical science. He trained at one of the premier academic institutions in the country and is the only full-time retina surgeon in Hattiesburg to have completed a prestigious 2-year AUPO vitreoretinal surgery fellowship.
