On August 16, 1876, the first edition of The Hartwell Sun came off a Washington hand press into the waiting arms of editor John Magill, a Confederate veteran who had volunteered for service at age 13. The paper is published for the Athens, Ga., and its surrounding communities. It reports on a variety of topics, including news, sports, weather and national news. In April of 1999 Community Newspapers purchased The Hartwell Sun.
