About NYAPT and School Transportation NYAPT is a membership-based professional association incorporated in 1974 as a 501-c-6 non-profit corporation. Our members are employed in school districts, BOCES, community and technical colleges, private school bus operators and community-based programs. Our members come from many levels within the school bus industry, including supervisors and managers, mechanics and technicians, trainers and safety specialists, and dispatchers. Our Board of Directors is comprised of six officers and directors from each of our twenty chapters who come from all corners of the state. Our association operates through a series of program and ad hoc committees and presents a full slate of programs and offerings for our members each year. Our chapters are engaged in a variety of learning and advocacy activities in their local communities. The school transportation industry in New York State can be profiled with the following information: there are more than 50, 000 school buses in our state ; there are approximately 54, 000 school bus drivers in our state ; school buses transport over 2.3 million children to and from school each day ; all of our student passengers combined will get onto or down from a school bus 1, 656, 000, 000 times in the average school year. Our school bus drivers are trained through a long-standing system of School Bus Driver Instructors who are prepared by State Education Department certified Master Instructors for such instruction and preparation. School buses are purchased in accordance with extensive specifications driven by state law and regulation. They are inspected rigorously twice annually by the State Department of Transportation for over 160 safety factors and are inspected on a pre-trip and post-trip basis every day by school bus drivers and technicians. A network of trained certified article 19 examiner assists the dept of motor vehicles in ensuring that all school bus drivers meet stringent training requirements. New Yorkers should be confident that the PROFESSIONALS in the State's school transportation industry are doing all they can to ensure the efficiency of the transportation services and the safety of those 2.3 million children who ride our school buses each day.
