General Info
Dr. John Fogarty is currently an attending physician and pulmonary medicine and sleep disorders at Physicians East PA. He is on faculty as a clinical assistant professor at the Brody School of Medicine at ECU Health Medical Center, and has repeatedly been recognized for excellence in teaching and training of pulmonary and critical care fellows. Dr. Fogarty completed his training in Pulmonary and Critical Care at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and prior to that did his internship and residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, now Northwell, in New York. He earned his medical degree at St. Georges University School of Medicine and was recognized there with the William H McCord Award for contribution to clinical programs, opening new clinical sites in London, Boston, and New York. Dr. Fogarty is involved in the care of patients with a variety of lung and respiratory conditions including asthma, COPD, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, sarcoidosis, and a host of other respiratory diseases. Dr. Fogarty founded the bimonthly Physicians East Thoracic Oncology multidisciplinary tumor board, fostering the care of lung cancer patients, and saw through the accreditation of the tumor board by the American College of Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Fogarty spent 3 years on the ECU Health Medical Center Chief of Staff team and spent 2020 as the Chief of Staff of ECU Health Medical Center, helping plan the medical center’s initial COVID response and also working in the medical ICU during that time. Dr. Fogarty continues to mentor pulmonary fellows in his office. Dr. Fogarty has been active in sleep medicine for over 30 years and cares for a variety of sleep medicine problems, including sleep-related breathing disorders, most notably sleep apnea, narcolepsy, sleep movement disorders, circadian rhythm disorders, and restless leg syndrome. Dr. Fogarty spent several years caring for active-duty Marines with sleep disorders at Cherry Point Naval Air Station in Havelock, North Carolina. Dr. Fogarty was also previously the medical director of the Pitt Community College polysomnography program, which trains and prepares sleep technicians to become registered in their field.
