• Glaucoma
  Glaucoma is a condition that occurs when pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) rises. The pressure is regulated by the balance between the amount of fluid the ciliary body of the eye produces and the amount that drains from the eye through the trabecular mesh work. When the drain becomes blocked or clogged, then the pressure rises. This pressure can crush the optic nerve, causing permanent vision loss, and sometimes blindness.

• Macular Degeneration
  Macular degeneration is a group of disorders which cause deterioration in the central part of the retina called the macula. The most common type of macular degeneration is age- related macular degeneration. Other types of macular degeneration (such as hereditary, myopic, inflammatory, and toxic) exist, but are much less common.

• Cataracts
  A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens that will occur with aging and other diseases. A cataract is not a film or growth over the eye. Cataracts cause blurred vision and can lead to blindness. The only treatment is surgical removal of the cataractous lens and replacement with an artificial lens implant.
• Cataract Surgery
  When the blurred vision caused by a cataract produces a visual handicap, cataract surgery may be considered. While one individual may require cataract surgery because of glare intolerance and depth perception problems associated with driving, a person who does not drive may find that cataract surgery can be delayed until reading vision becomes blurred.
• Eye Exam
  Because vision that has been destroyed by glaucoma cannot be regained, it is very important to detect glaucoma before much visual loss has occurred. Therefore, the key is early detection and regular eye exams. Your yearly eye exam should include a pressure check and evaluation of the optic nerve. If either result is unusual, a visual field should be done.

  Diabetic retinopathy is a retinal disorder seen in diabetic persons. Diabetes compromises the circulation in many parts of the body. Likewise, the blood vessels in the retina can be affected by diabetes. The circulation can be affected in several ways, including leakage of serum through leaky blood vessels (edema), closure or occlusion of blood vessels (ischemia), growth of abnormal new blood vessels (neovascularization), bleeding within the cavity of the eye (vitreous hemorrhage), and scar tissue pulling the retina out of position (retinal detachment).
