My experience was absolutely horrific with the Alamance County magistrate named Nance. I called on the phone to ask questions regarding involuntary commitment for a relative and she was extremely unhelpful and rude, told me to get a lawyer and then when I complained she was not being helpful SHE HUNG UP ON ME! How unprofessional!!! When I tried to call back she refused to answer the phone. About a week later I became even more fearful for the safety of my family and decided to go to the Magistrates Office to initiate the involuntary commitment. Mind you I have had to do this several times before in more than one state with no problem whatsoever. Nance told me to pick up the phone outside her office window to speak. I began to tell her how fearful I was that my family member or my family may be in danger. I had quite a pile of paperwork (printed texts etc...) to prove my allegations. She rudely told me I should just go tell someone at the mental health department. I tried to explain that it was an emergency and the person is a severe flight risk. She asked had I seen the person in 24 hours and I had not. I told her I was more than willing to go pay them a visit and come back to file paperwork. At this point she told me she would not help me and slammed her phone down on the other side of the glass. I was never rude or belligerent so why would she treat me this way? I was unable to get any help or respect whatsoever from this person whether I was in person or on the phone... and I must ask since I received no help, who is responsible if there is a tragedy in my family because I could receive no help from this lady named Nance?!?!!! Our mental health system is failing people in this country but OUR MAGISTRATE is failing the people of our community as well!
