- CaulkingIf you’re on a budget and you don’t want to spend large amounts of money, then there is a way for you to refinish your bathtub on your own. This will require the use of alternative tools compared to the ones we mentioned above. For example, you will want gloves, wire wool, brushes, cleaning fluid, and goggles. This approach will leave you with a better result than simply painting your bathtub, but not as good a result as using professionals. There are some special steps you need to take to make this a success: 1. Wash your bathtub and take off the caulking. 2. Detach and place to one side all of the fixtures within the bathtub, such as the faucets. 3. Cover up everything around the bath so that nothing gets harmed or stained by chemicals or the DIY process, and put some fans on to waft out any smells. 4. Use water and powder from an etching kit for the etching process to weaken the old finish, and then rinse out the tub with water. 5. For sanding, follow the same process as outlined above. 6. After sanding, use towels to soak up any water, followed by cloths to pick up any loose dirt and dust. 7. Use a roller to rub in the layers of primer, and then let it dry out. 8. Make a coating of epoxy, and begin rolling it onto both sides of your bathtub. You should apply it both up and down, and side to side. This will ensure the best coverage and pick up any drips or streaks. The base of the bath should be done last. You can also use a sponge for the edges. 9. Repeat step 8 once more with another epoxy coating. 10. Wait for 2 days and ventilate the bathroom for the first 24 hours and longer if necessary. 11. Once you are sure everything is dry, put back all of the fixtures that you previously removed. Then caulk your bathtub and wait for one more night before you attempt to use it. That’s the difference between resurfacing a bathtub yourself and getting it done professionally. Now that you’ve read this you’ll be able to understand bathtub refurbishing, as well as knowing how to refinish a bathtub. Besides the improvement in the bathtub, there are other DIY projects for home improvements you can take on.
