- ArthritisA common cause of heel pain is a foot condition known as plantar fasciitis. This condition affects the plantar fascia, which is the band of tissue connecting the heel to the toes. Plantar fasciitis can cause debilitating heel pain and may gradually worsen until medical attention is received. Intense heel pain can also be a result of Achilles tendinopathy, which is a heel and lower calf injury that happens from overuse. Some people who have peripheral neuropathy have a tingling or numbing sensation in their heel that can be uncomfortable. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause the cartilage to tear in the heel and surrounding area and may cause inflammation, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. If you are experiencing heel pain for any reason, it is strongly suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can determine what the cause is and offer the correct treatment solutions.
- Plantar FasciitisOrthotics, unlike typical shoe inserts, are prescribed by a podiatrist to help provide your feet with cushion and support. They can also aid in correcting a specific foot condition that you may be dealing with. Conditions such as diabetes, plantar fasciitis, bursitis, arthritis, and flat feet can highly benefit from the use of orthotics, and orthotics may assist you in alleviating pain that often comes with those ailments.
- CryotherapyIf you have plantar warts, your podiatrist may try different treatment methods depending on your specific case. Some treatments for plantar warts are peeling medicines (salicylic acid), freezing medicines (cryotherapy), or surgical procedures. Laser treatments and vaccines are also used to treat plantar warts.
- Pediatric CareDr. Bhakta’s particular areas of interest include podiatric sports medicine, injuries, and pediatrics. He has been playing sports and working out his entire life, (played tennis and basketball in high school) and obtained many of the acute injuries his patients often see him for. He knows how these injuries feel and what is best for recovery. He works closely with The Running Store (no affiliation) for proper shoe fitting and gait analysis and other local vendors.
- Primary CareVery nice and clean office. The doctor was very personal and asked pertinent questions and listened to my answers. Most doctors I feel don’t listen anymore. I feel she is concerned about my health. Something that I don’t see anymore. I wish my primary care physician was as concerned as she was.

- Minimally Invasive SurgeryMinimally invasive surgery can mean smaller incisional approaches or endoscopic procedures. Using minimally invasive techniques and surgeries provide our patients with many benefits over traditional treatments and surgeries. These benefits typically include...
- Bunion SurgeryMinimally Invasive Bunion Surgery. This type of procedure requires only micro incisions to be made in the skin of the foot to correct the deformity and realign the bones. This type of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is an alternative to traditional bunion surgery. It can reduce the pain, risk, recovery time and scarring associated with open surgery. There are various techniques of MIS bunion surgery including Percutaneous Chevron Akin—where the podiatrist cuts and repositions the first metatarsal and big toe bones—and minimally invasive Percutaneous Lapidus technique, which involves cutting the big toe bone, then realigning and fusing the midfoot joint.
- BunionsWe treat a wide range of conditions from heel pain, Achilles tendinitis, diabetic foot disorders, toenail issues, sports injuries, and more! We treat all ages, including children for many issues such as warts, ingrown toenails, flat feet, and injuries, to name a few. We are also one of the only podiatry practices in the area to offer minimally invasive surgery for bunions and other conditions.
- Ingrown ToenailsIngrown toenails can form when the side of a toenail begins to grow into the flesh surrounding the nail. As a result, the affected toe—most commonly the big toe—may become red, swollen, painful, and—in severe cases—infected.
- Hammertoe SurgeryDr. Ali has specialties in sports medicine, diabetic limb salvage, and minimally invasive bunion and hammertoe surgery. She is affiliated with several hospitals including UVA Prince William Hospital, Manassas, VA, as well as UVA Haymarket Medical Center, Haymarket, VA, and Stone Springs Hospital in Dulles, VA.
- CornsCorns on the feet can develop as a result of excessive pressure from shoes and socks that are worn. A corn is a small, hardened area of skin that often forms on the side of the pinky toe but may also form on top of the toes. While corns are generally uncomfortable, relief may be found when the pressure is removed and better fitting socks and shoes are worn. If the corn is severe, it may be surgically removed, which is a minor procedure. Many people choose to use a protective pad that is worn over the corn, which may be helpful in temporarily reducing the amount of pain. Maintaining proper foot care may be beneficial in preventing corns from developing. This can consist of washing and drying the feet thoroughly, followed by using a pumice stone that can remove hard skin. This is a practice that can help people who see the beginning of a corn developing. If you have one or more corns on your foot, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can treat it accordingly, and offer you additional prevention tips.

- FungusThe treatment itself is non-invasive and very straightforward. The podiatrist will move the laser in a grid-like pattern over the infected toenail. This is a virtually pain-free procedure that generally takes less than 30 minutes, though it could take longer depending on how many nails are infected. After the procedure, the appearance of the nail will not have changed. While the fungus has been killed, the nail will have to grow out in order to see the effect of the treatment.
- LesionsIf you suspect you have plantar warts, you may have the following symptoms: pain or tenderness while walking, a lesion that interrupts the ridges in the skin of your foot, small fleshy lesions on the bottom of the foot, or a callus where a wart has grown inward over a well-defined spot on the skin.
- Sports MedicineAs with any sporting activity, it’s very important to be aware of the safety precautions needed to help avoid injury and reduce risk. With that being said, injuries of the foot and ankle are fairly common among those who actively participate in sports.
- Physical TherapyPossible conditions that may arise due to injury of the Achilles tendon include tears, ruptures, tendinitis, peritendinitis, tendinosis, tendinopathy, and bursitis. When trying to diagnose if one has issues with their Achilles tendon, a podiatrist will commonly check for any pain, swelling, or discoloration around the heel or lower leg area. Different treatments for issues concerning the Achilles tendon vary, but may include over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers for intense discomfort, alternating ice and heat therapy, custom-made orthotics, physical therapy, and in severe cases, surgery. To help prevent injury to the Achilles tendon, it’s recommended to regularly perform stretches involving the muscles of the lower leg.

- Achilles TendonitisThere are many different causes of heel pain, including strains or sprains, tarsal tunnel syndrome, stress fractures, Achilles tendonitis, and heel bursitis. One of the most common causes of heel pain for children and teenagers specifically is Sever’s disease. Sever’s disease can develop due to overuse or repetitive microtrauma of the heel bone's growth plates. This condition is often seen among those who are active in sporting activities.
- Ankle SprainSome sports may be considered more dangerous in terms of foot and ankle injuries compared to others. These sports may include basketball, running, football, soccer, and dancing. Sports that require tightly worn shoes as well as have a particular focus on jumping typically run a higher risk of injury. Because the feet are considered the foundation of the body, help us stay balanced, and enable us to perform our everyday activities, professional help should be sought at the first instinct of something gone wrong.
- Bunions ProblemsA bunion is a bone deformity usually occurring at the base of the big toe. This is a progressive condition that is made worse by inward pressure from tight shoes. Bunions can be very painful, and in some instances surgery may be necessary to remove them.

- Flat Feet
- Fungus ToenailsToenail fungus is notoriously difficult to cure with over-the-counter medicines. From foot soaks to ointments the efficacy of these is extremely varied, at best. However, in late 2010 the FDA approved the PinPointe FootLaser. This was the first of the “cold laser” treatments to gain federal approval. The laser kills the fungus in and under the nail, ridding it of the infection.
- HammertoesHammertoe is a characterized by one or more of the toes having a bend in the middle joint. This occurs because of weakening of the muscle due to poorly fitted shoes or a genetically inherited trait.
- Heel SpursHeel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

- Ingrown ToenailsTreatment for an ingrown toenail will vary on a case by case basis. One form of treatment requires lifting the ingrown nail and placing a splint or piece of cotton underneath. Another method for a more severe case would involve partially removing the nail. For cases that need extreme care, the nail itself and tissue would have to be removed.
- Pediatric Foot Care
- Plantar FasciitisPlantar fasciitis may occur when the band of tissues that support the arch of your foot experience too much stress. These tissues can become strained from frequently performing sporting activities, thus causing inflammation and pain at the bottom of the heel.
- Podiatric SurgerySubtalar Joint Arthroereisis is a minimally invasive flat foot surgery. It is a less aggressive option used to treat a mild or pediatric flatfoot. The implant blocks excessive pronation of the subtalar joint. A small incision is made over the lateral foot, and then a small implant is inserted into the sinus tarsi, a small canal that goes up to the ankle below the talus bone. Minimal dissection allows for a quicker recovery period and a shorter immobilization time when compared to full reconstructive methods.
