I really like Harold's Restaurant. I ate there today and had the special of the day - all-you-can-eat pinto beans, cornbread, fatback (fried til crispy salt pork), slice of onion and homemade chow-chow. It doesn't get any more southern than this. The place, itself, looks like a place out of time - say, back in the 1950's when they didn't have styrofoam platters and coffee in a styrofoam cup (you get the real deal). The menu was varied and I also tasted the chicken stew (I wish I had bought a gallon) and bought a couple of chili dogs to bring home since this is what they're famous for. The chili smelled wonderful. The staff was more than courteous, the place was clean (the staff wore lightweight plastic gloves which they changed after each order's preparation) and the prices were so low, you could afford to try several menu selections. Located in a part of town (right on the main drag, though) that has seen better days, they've kept it the way it always was. Check it out!
