The Virginia Department of Transportation s Fredericksburg District includes more than 5,200 miles of roadways. The district features over 4,500 miles of primary and secondary roads. It also includes nearly 45 miles of interstate roadways. The district is a part of the Virginia Department of Transportation, which is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state's roads, bridges and tunnels. The Virginia Department of Transportation, also known as VDOT, employs a staff of up to 8,400 m full-time people. The department has an operations and security division. The Virginia Department of Transportation is operated by the government of the State of Virginia.
