Established in 1976, the California Conservation Corps is a unit that operates residential and nonresidential programs and centers. Its work force development program offers youths to serve their state and provides life skills training for issues related to environmental conservation, fire protection and emergency response. The unit hires youths between the ages of 18 and 25 for conservation-related work. The California Conservation Corps conducts several search and rescue operations and staffs public assistance centers during large-scale disasters. The unit administers the Backcountry Trails Program, which was started in 1979 and preserves wilderness areas and makes them safer and accessible for the public. It maintains a location in Fortuna, Calif.
