Six Pence Pub = Unhappy Birthday

To me, birthday dinners have always meant family, fun and great food. My birthday was last week and I chose to have my celebration at Six Pence Pub in Baxter Village. Upon entering, all 7 of us were pleased with the appearance (layout, decor, cleanliness) and happily anticipated a great meal. Unfortunately, once our meal was served, we discovered that appearance doesn't necessarily equate to good food. The roast beef and pork roast were dry and tuff; the pork chops were extremely salty; the mashed potatoes had no taste, making us think they used boxed, instant potatoes instead of fresh peeled potatoes; the gravey tasted like it came from a can, it certainly wasn't homemade; vegetables were overcooked mushy; instead of a bun, the chicken sandwich was served between 2 slices of bread and the turkey club was served on cold, dry, wheat bread rather than toasted white bread, as I prefer. Keep in mind that the waitress never asked what type of bread or roll we wanted our sandwiches served on and in the excitment of conversation we failed to ask. Out of everything that we ordered, the only good thing were the french fries.

The portions were small and the meals overpriced. We were there on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't crowded so there was no excuse for any of it. Our meals were so bad that we didn't want to take a chance on dessert so we went elsewhere for that. If they want to stay in business they would be wise to hire a new chef and perhaps experienced wait staff.

Cool weather comfort food

The 3 times we have been to Six Pence, we really enjoyed it. My daughter and husband love the fish and chips and I crave the shepherd's pie. The atmosphere is a little upscale but not stuffy and still kid friendly.
