Reviews
Interesting, but not surprising. I also lost my AFIE insurance and I've been with them since I was a cadet. My house is nowhere near the water, not in a flood zone, and received an excellent rating from MyFloridaSafeHomes, a state review agency that recommends improvements to consider to protect homes from hurricane damage. I discovered the same about the USAA policy holders--current members were allowed to keep their coverage, but could not get new policies if they changed addresses in Florida. Interestingly, a guy I work with lives on the water, but has not lost his AFIE policy. My wife and I feel abandoned by a company we trusted.
This is not a company any military member should willingly do business with when seeking homeowner insurance. Unlike their primary competitor, USAA, they dropped 1700 customers in Florida, regardless of length time as a member, number of past claims, or structural evaluation of the home. Notices were sent, coverage was cancelled, and no provision was allowed for review and appeal. They are a great company as long as nothing happens that you might need insurance for. Not exactly the "soldiers banding together to look out for our own families" company that they sold themselves on.
