- ArthritisAquatic Physical Therapy – Aquatic therapy takes advantage of the physical properties of water to assist with the rehabilitative process. Buoyancy, turbulence, hydrostatic pressure, and thermal properties of water can assist with the rehabilitation of a patient. Those suffering from chronic pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, lumbar fusion surgery, or with a limited weight-bearing status are just a few of the many different patient populations that can benefit from aquatic therapy.

- Plantar Fasciitis
- CryotherapyCryotherapy or Cold Therapy – used to cause vasoconstriction (the blood vessels constrict or decrease their diameter) to reduce the amount of fluid that leaks out of the capillaries into the tissue spaces (swelling) in response to injury of tissue. Ice or cold is used most frequently in acute injuries, but also an effective pain reliever for even the most chronic pain.
- Primary CarePatients most often are referred to physical therapy from a sports medicine, orthopedic, neurologic or primary care physician when dysfunction is noted that can be address and assisted by a physical therapist. Our physical therapists have specialized training in concussion rehabilitation techniques to help patients reduce symptoms and get back to their normal activities.
- Urinary IncontinenceMen who experience pain below the waist, dysfunction, or urinary incontinence can experience positive results from physical therapy. Dr. Andy Tatom, PT, DPT, OCS, is the only male Physical Therapist in Lynchburg who offers a comprehensive treatment plan to decrease symptoms and minimize pain. Treatment will be discreet and tailored to each individual for maximum results and total patient comfort.

- Carpal Tunnel SyndromeUltrasound – ultrasound uses a high frequency sound wave emitted from the sound head when electricity is passed through a quartz crystal. The sound waves cause the vibration of water molecules deep within tissue causing a heating effect. When the sound waves are pulsed, they cause a vibration of the tissue rather than heating. The stream of sound waves helps with nutrition exchange at the cellular level and healing. Studies have shown that ultrasound is helpful for ligament healing and clinically, for carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle spasm.

- UltrasoundFor many patients, one of the primary objectives is pain relief. This is frequently accomplished with hands-on techniques, modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and/or heat or cold therapy. Movement often provides pain relief as well. Your physical therapist will provide you with the appropriate exercises not only for pain relief but to recover range of motion, strength, and endurance.
- MRIFor most cases of low back pain, imaging tests such as x-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are not helpful for diagnosing the cause. However, if your physical therapist suspects that your low back pain might be caused by a serious health condition, the therapist will refer you to other health care professionals for evaluation.

- Chemotherapy"I have been going for treatment from Dr. Andy and Megan for quite a while (not sure of the starting date) and they have changed my life. I am a cancer survivor (neck/tongue) and have had a lot of neck pain that was restricting my normal life. Through their very hard work and guidance I am now moving my neck as I did before cancer and the radiation\chemotherapy and side effects that followed. Plus, they are just very good people. They care very much about me as a patient and also as a person. I am impressed with their work. So much so I am convinced that they can help ease my chronic back pain/poor flexibility. I have an appointment at the end of the month with my family doctor. I am going to talk with him about prescribing for me physical therapy to help ease this painful/restricted part of me that is my back. Please convey to Dr. Andy and Megan a heartfelt thank you so much for their hard work. I hope to see them again soon! "
- IontophoresisIontophoresis – medications are propelled through the skin by an electrical charge. This modality works on the physical concept that like charges repel each other, therefore, a positively charged medication will be repelled through the skin to the underlying tissues by the positively charged pad of an iontophoresis machine. Iontophoresis is usually prescribed for injuries such as shoulder or elbow bursitis.

- Wound CareWound Care – Some therapists specialize in the treatment and care of wounds. This is accomplished by the removal of unviable tissue (debridement), the application of special dressings and prescription drugs/ointments, and the use of ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and aquatic modalities to promote healing. Exercise and patient education are also routine components of a wound care program.

- Aquatic TherapyAquatic Therapy combines the physical properties of water with specific exercises. The water’s buoyancy can allow for a pain-free full-body workout which decreases stress on painful joints. Regular exercise can lead to gradual increases in strength, flexibility, and range of motion which can result in improved function with less pain.
- Manual TherapyManual therapy focuses analytically on the connectivity of each muscle and its relationship to other joints and the spine.
