All patients diagnosed with diabetes are at risk for developing retinopathy. Some of the risk factors for developing retinopathy include poor blood sugar control, obesity, high blood pressure and even gender. Pregnant women with diabetes are also at increased risk for diabetic retinopathy. There are two types of diabetic retinopathy, proliferative and nonproliferative.
