- Skin CarePrevention of staph infections can be accomplished by good skin care, including cleansing any cuts or scrapes with soap and water and keeping open sores covered until they heal. A topical antibiotic ointment may be used as well. Medical care should be sought for a skin sore that becomes progressively more red, swollen, or tender, or that drains fluid or pus.
