Dr. Tufte grew up in Northwood, ND, completed his undergraduate in chemical engineering at UND. He earned his Doctor of Optometry degree with summa cum laude honors from The Ohio State University in 1982. Dr. Tufte completed extensive research on tear film, corneal eye health and contact lens performance in the OSU Master’s program. Dr. Tufte has practiced primary, secondary, and tertiary eyecare in North Dakota since 1982, working directly with ophthalmology in medical eyecare his entire career. In 1984 he started the Optometry and Optical Departments at Fargo Clinic – MeritCare – Sanford, and in 2008, Dr. Tufte and his wife, Deb, opened Eyes on 42nd, then Eyes on 43rd, Eyes on Broadway, and now practicing at the newly updated Eyes on 45th in South Fargo, ND and Dakota Eye Care in east Mesa, AZ. Dr. Tufte specializes in the management of all eye problems including Glaucoma, Cataracts, Diabetes, Macular Degeneration, Infections, Allergies, Dry Eyes (Creating the Fargo Eye Center) and all eye disorders associated with systemic health diseases. He also manages all surgery, including cataract surgery, as he is a multi-focal lens implant patient himself, upper blepharoplasty (lid surgery), which he has also undergone, for droopy lids and LASIK surgeries. Dr. Tufte created the Fargo Contact Lens Center and has been a consultant for Acuvue – Vistakon, Alcon – Ciba, Bausch & Lomb and CooperVision; testing new contact lens designs and materials, specializing in correcting every eye prescription with the latest contact lens technology. He has been a speaker for Alcon and Allergan Eye Pharmaceutical companies, educating his colleagues and others in the optical field about the most successful treatments for eye disorders. Dr. Tufte has served as an Olympic vision consultant, testing and advising visual performance in the Olympic Village for all world athletes.
