General Info
“I enjoy the challenge of performing technically precise operations. There is no better experience than speaking with a patient and his or her family after an operation and assuring them that the problem is taken care of and they are on their way to a full recovery.” Even as a child, Dr. Otchy knew he wanted to be a physician, and he planned to become a family practitioner. In medical school, he found that he was best suited for surgery because of the opportunity to definitively address patients’ problems and work with them until their health issues are resolved. After earning a Bachelor of Science from Manhattan College, Dr. Otchy received the Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark. He did a surgical residency and an endoscopy preceptorship at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. After spending six years at Brooke as a general surgeon, he went to the Mayo Clinic to complete his training in colon and rectal surgery. Dr. Otchy completed the rest of his military career at Walter Reed Medical Center where he served the final three years as Chief of the Department of Surgery. After retiring from the army he joined Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgery in 2001. He has a strong interest in resident teaching and received the Teacher of the Year for Colorectal Surgery at INOVA Fairfax General Surgery Residency in 2006, 2007 and 2009. Dr. Otchy holds an academic appointment as an Assistant Professor Of Surgery at both the Medical College of Virginia and Howard University Medical School. Dr. Otchy is appropriately proud of his 21 years of service in the U.S. Army. He served in Iraq during Desert Storm and received several medals for his service, including the Legion of Merit, the Kuwait Liberation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He has been married for 36 years, has four children and six granddaughters. Dr Otchy is active in his church often leading and participating in small group Bible studies.
