- Primary CareIt is important for diabetics to have routine examinations from their primary care physician and to have annual eye exams to determine the eye’s health. If you would like more information on diabetic eye disease, call Ohio Valley Eye Institute at 812-421-2020 and request more information.
- GlaucomaOver 3 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it. Approximately 120,000 are blind from glaucoma, accounting for 9% to 12% of all cases of blindness in the U.S. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the U.S. and the first leading cause of preventable blindness.

- CataractsWhat is it? The AcrySof® ReSTOR® Apodized Diffractive Optic Posterior IOL (ReSTOR®) is a permanent artificial lens. ReSTOR® is implanted in the eye to restore vision after the natural lens is removed because of cataracts with or without presbyopia (over 40 vision).
- Cataract SurgeryThe AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL is used in adult patients with and without presbyopia, who desire near, intermediate and distance vision with increased independence from glasses following cataract surgery.
- Eye ExamEven for people with no vision complaints, a comprehensive eye examination is an important part of maintaining good health. In adults, a dilated fundus exam may reveal signs of diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetes or high blood pressure – even before the patient may be aware he or she has any problems.

- Diabetic RetinopathyDiabetes can cause damage to small blood vessels throughout the body, including the eye’s retina. The retina is the delicate nerve tissue lining the inside of the eye. The retina is the structure in the back of the eye that receives the image we see which is transmitted to the brain through the optic nerve. Diabetic Retinopathy is the name of the condition that affects the eyes of diabetic patients and is caused by the deterioration of blood vessels in the retina.
- UltrasoundOur Surgeons, led by Dr. David Malitz, use advanced Ozil Ultrasound technique in performing cataract surgery. The technique avoids exposure to laser radiation using only ultrasound energy to break up the cataract. Although many Evansville Cataract Surgeons use 30 year old technology placing a needle behind the eye and risking damage to the eye and delicate nerves and muscles surrounding the eye, for 20 years Dr. Malitz has used only eye drops (topical anesthetic) to numb the eye, Dr. Malitz creates only a tiny two plane self-sealing incision and high-energy sound waves to break the cataract into very small particles which are then vacuumed from the eye with specially designed Alcon equipment. Alcon is the leader in equipment to remove cataracts and is used by specially trained surgeons to minimize stray energy that can damage the cornea, iris and capsule. To compensate for the removal of the eye’s natural lens, an intra-ocular lens (IOL) is implanted into the eye. We customize the lens and lens material to be most compatable with the patients’ needs and budget. Even our basic lens is an aspheric acrylic design to optomize visual performance. For patients that want the most advanced technology we offer the Technis Multifocal lens which allows consistent near and far vision without the aid for glasses. For those that are not candidates for this technology we also offer the Restor and Trulign and Crystalens as well as Toric lens designs (Staar, Alcon and AMO) to correct astigmatism. After using this special small incision, the eye remains tightly sealed by the natural outward pressure within your eye and stitches and patches are not even needed.
- BotoxAge and stress can create fine wrinkles around and above the eyes, such as crow’s feet and furrows of the brow. These are partially the result of facial muscles contracting and forming wrinkles in the skin above them. BOTOX® Cosmetic offers a simple temporary solution.
- Eyelid SurgeryIn addition to procedures to restore youthful vision, Ohio Valley Eye Institute offers cosmetic procedures to give the face a more youthful appearance. The area around the eyes is often the first part of the face to show aging, especially fine wrinkles, puffy lower lids, and droopy upper lids. Sun and wind damage and environmental factors take a toll on the skin’s surface. With procedures such as eyelid surgery, BOTOX® injections and laser skin rejuvenation, we can make your face look years younger.
- BlepharoplastyThe upper and lower eyelids, like all facial skin, become loose and saggy with age. The corrective surgery to counteract this is known as blepharoplasty. It can not only take years off your appearance, but, in the case of the upper lids, may improve vision.
