- CataractsAre you in the greater Cleveland, Ohio area and want to learn more about cataracts and cataract treatment options? A cataract is an opacification (clouding) of the natural lens inside of the eye. The lens helps us focus on objects at different distances. As a part of the normal aging process, changes in the lens can cause it to become cloudy. Left untreated, a cataract can become so dense that it causes blindness. In fact, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world. The original meaning of “cataract” is “waterfall,” and the name was chosen because distorted vision caused by a cataract reminded people of the distorted view that is obtained when looking through a waterfall. If you’re concerned about your symptoms of Cataracts or want to speak with our eye doctors directly, schedule an appointment at the Cleveland Eye Clinic.

It is possible that you could develop a disease called Diabetic Retinopathy. This disease is a leading cause of blindness in American adults. It is caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina. In some people with diabetic retinopathy, retinal blood vessels may swell and leak fluid. In other people, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. These changes may result in vision loss or blindness.
- UltrasoundOcular Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a state-of-the-art diagnostic technology that provides direct, real-time, cross sectional images of the retina. This technology is much like ultrasound technology, except it uses light waves rather than ultra-sound waves. The OCT scans an infrared red light across the retina, which generates a cross sectional image of the tissues in great detail. This test is quick, requires no dilation, and enables the doctor to view and accurately measure structural changes in the retina, as if it were under a microscope. The high-resolution images produced by OCT allow for early diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of conditions, including glaucoma, macular edema, macular hole, and age-related macular degeneration.

- BlepharoplastyDroopy eyelids are extremely common with age; however, some patients experience vision problems when eyelids droop too much. Drooping upper eyelids can eventually obstruct vision while drooping lower eyelids can cause discomfort and dryness. Lower eyelid bags can also become troublesome after a certain amount of time. A common oculoplastic surgery, called a blepharoplasty, is performed to correct these issues. During a blepharoplasty, your surgeon makes an incision in either the lower or upper eyelid to manipulate the amount of fat, or in the eyelid crease to reduce excess skin.
